ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Gold Coast Race Recap – by Coach Heather
This was my big A race for the year! I have prepared for this race all year long! I worked smartly with my Coach! I was ready to kill it! One of my athletes sent me a quote! Don’t let fatigue make a Coward out of you!
Race morning I had such peace and a different mindset than I have ever before! I was ready to go leave it out on the course! 10:30am we started warming up want about 10:45 we were swimming to the right of the start line! We felt great! The water was a little chilly but once you got in and moving you were good to go!
You needed to be in the corral 20 minutes early! I was getting into my mojo listening to the music (I love music!). Getting my mind ready to go kill it! Our wave was called @11:05am! Then they told us to come up one more to the start and out the ribbon up so the wave behind us waited!
The race director counted us down! The official at the start asked us how many buoys on the left! 5!! The horn went off and off we went!
I was in a pack and keeping up! The current drifted us and we swam back! I had a good swim not as fast because of the current! Good for me! Out of the water into T1 and off on the bike I went! I was in 2 packs on the bike! The Aussies and all of us worked together! That was the cool thing! We weren’t working against one another we worked together! 2 mistakes on the bike course they changed the night before (I was told)! I was going around the round about like we were supposed to and the volunteer told me no to keep going straight after I went around the round about so I got back into the pack and kept moving on! The same thing around another round about but they made me stop and wait for traffic! (This costed me a few minutes or more! But I kept moving) I told myself make it hurt! Coach said make it hurt! I finished and as I was finishing the bike I was passing an Aussie and she was taking off her shoes and almost hit me I said shit and she got back over lol! We had some headwind on the bike but it felt great! The weather was perfect not hot and humid like Florida!
On to T2!
I was on the run and went over the bridge and was thinking pick those legs up you can go faster! Came over the bridge and saw Tim Yount and he said Heather looking strong! A nice compliment! I couldn’t see where to go and the official pointed me towards the finish I said I need my first lap and he pointed towards the finish! Before I realized what happened Lauren handed me a flag and said great job then the announcer started announcing me and I was ticked so I turned around and found my way to my first lap (which costed me a few minutes). I didn’t throw down the flag I could have had a penalty for littering! All of my run pictures have me holding the USA flag the whole 5k! That was a short lived moment lol! The announcer said oh she needed a 2nd lap. He announced me as the first American in my Age Group! That would be a dream come true! I feet good and looked at my watch and I was running a 7:55 and said I can pick this up! I started to and was feeling good! I had some headwind but pushed through it! I passed many people! My legs wanted to slow down and I said no! They didn’t listen lol! On my 2nd lap near the end I was on a Russians tail and we were coming close to the blue carpet and I said oh no and passed her! Nobody is passing me I said to myself! The announcer was like here she comes pumping her arms and sprinting!. I picked it up and sprinted to the finish! I could hear someone behind me and it was a Teammate!
I felt great! My nutrition was spot on! Everything that was in my control was great! To race on this stage is very humbling! 5200 athletes! There just needed to be someone saying left finish and right 1st/2nd run lap as you came out of transition! Tgat had never happened until this race! Lessons learned! I had a great race! I think one of the best other than the few mishaps!
